The Place of Food in the 2023 General Election

Kore Hiakai have prepared three papers to use in the lead up to the 2023 General Election about our responses to immediate food insecurity and our commitment to create food security in our communities.

These papers have been crafted from research Kore Hiakai has been engaged in over the last three years, with input from many community food groups. Each paper concludes with two or three questions for candidates standing in the 2023 General Election - but they also make great discussion starters. Please use these papers in ways that work for you and your community. And feel free to get in touch - admin@korehiakai.org.nz

  • The ongoing need for food assistance - exploring how government address the increased need after COVID and role of community groups in meeting that need.

  • Beyond Food Parcels - exploring our long term goals to ensure our communities are food secure - without food assistance.

  • The impacts of government overpayment debt - exploring how government might address the current (no fault) debt from overpayments (approx $1 Billion) held by those who have received benefits.
